Meet The Collaborators

The Founders

The founders of the Collaborative Innovation Institute are thought leaders in collaborative innovation, with deep experience that inspires others to think from an overview-effect perspective and with a mindset of possibilities, opportunities and breakthroughs.

We encourage all who share our vision and are willing to collaborate with us in our mission to join the Institute. We are committed to partner, support and train five thousand master collaborative innovation facilitators in the next five years. Our intention is to change the world by bringing the possibilities of collaborative innovation to millions of people in the world.

Bart Barthelemy

Dr. Robert Barthelemy is the Founding Director of the Wright Brothers Institute and the Wright Brothers Institute’s IDEA Lab. He has been a consultant to a variety of aerospace industry companies and federal government organizations, including Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, Ball, GRC, UTC, various Department of Defense organizations and the Air Force Research Laboratory. Bart has served as Visiting Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University and Adjunct Professor at the University of Dayton.  Bart was the National Director of the National Aerospace Plane Program where he was responsible for the technical development of the nation’s hypersonic aerospace plane.  Bart has also served as Technical Director of the Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, the Air Force’s largest research and development complex. Bart’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from MIT, Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering and Physics from MIT, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nuclear Physics/Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University. Bart published High Performance, a book on high performance technology leadership in 1985, and The Sky Is Not The Limit: Breakthrough Leadership, St. Lucie Press, a book on breakthrough leadership in 1993.

Charles Smith

Dr. Charles E. Smith is a highly-experienced Futurist, Author, and Executive Coach. He is a personal and leadership coach and organizational behavior consultant stimulating breakthrough thinking, culture change, and seemingly impossible results. A graduate of the Boston Public Latin School, Charlie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Relations from Harvard College, an MBA from the Harvard Business School, a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, and a Certificate in Gestalt Methods from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. He was Visiting Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Sir George Williams University in Montreal, former President of the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of New Mexico, and Editor of Transformation Magazine published by the Library of Professional Coaching. Dr. Smith has written three books, The Merlin Factor, Leadership and Strategic Intent, Navigating from the Future, Don’t be a Noodle in Someone Else’s Soup, Eruditio, a Journal of the World Academy of Art and Science and many articles located in the Library of Professional Coaching, Current interests are in deep dives into the nature of collaborative innovation, conscious conversations, and transformational climate change at all levels of business and society. He is currently creating additional issues for the Journal of Collaborative Innovation for the Library of Professional Psychology.

Bob Johnston

Bob Johnston is the Founder and Managing Associate of the Strategy Innovation Group. We have partnered with executive leadership at 3M, P&G, IBM, BMW, Hewlett-Packard, Marriott International, United Way Worldwide and Carl Zeiss, among others, to monetize sustainable new value in their industry, (i.e. 3M’s CEO valued this new “non-incremental to breakthrough” growth pipeline at $6 billion after 4 years.)

We are pioneering a 21st century approach to accelerated enterprise growth using artificial intelligence and the internet. Result: greater growth in less time and more cost-effective. We have co-created and co-facilitated the FutureMakers Summit in Palo Alto, CA for executive leadership with the Center for Creative Leadership, the Institute for The Future and Electronic Arts.  (Watch Pre-Summit Video + Post-Summit Recap + Highlights Video).

Bob is also the co-author of the book, The Power of Strategy Innovation. He is a Past President, Chairman of the Board and Board Director at PDMA - Product Development and Management Association, the premier advocate for product development and product management professionals in the world. He designed an Innovation Lab for United Way Worldwide (1,700 leaders trained). Bob was elected to the Hall of Fame at the Creative Problem-Solving Institute and for 8 years was an Officer and Board Member for the Creative Education Foundation. He’s a co-founder of Global Odyssey for Youth. From 1983-2000, he was the Founder and Managing Principal of IdeaScope Associates. He’s currently a Board Member of the Vineyard Montessori School and President of Vineyard FutureWorks.

Marta Reis

Marta Reis is the Program Director for the Strategy Innovation Group and manages strategy innovation initiatives. She works closely with co-authors, Bob Johnston & Doug Bate, of the book, The Power of Strategy Innovation, to enable enterprises to identify new strategic frontiers and new revenue-generating innovations or growth opportunities on those frontiers. She also founded The Visionality Course, a six session program where you practice new ways to develop and turn raw ideas into creative projects.
